The AnneeMatthew Story – Our humble beginnings (Part 2)

The AnneeMatthew Story – Our humble beginnings (Part 2)

It was year 2001. The internet was at its infancy stage. Touch phone didn’t exist. Neither did digital camera! No internet banking. No PayPal. Hosting a website costed me more than $300 annually. It was ridiculously expensive but I didn’t know that. I did everything from scratch. I was a SAHM and, all I had was determination. But I didn’t know where to start! I didn’t know who to ask for help either because there were very few online stores in those days and most are overseas! Even Amazon just started. I knew I could only sell my items online because I couldn’t afford a retail outlet. I wanted an e-commerce store. I didn’t know how. I had zero knowledge. But I have seen online stores from overseas and, I have purchased things from them before. So, I bought a book – “How to start an online store for dummies”. Serious! That was what the book was called! I also bought a software, Frontpage (this software is now obsolete!!) A lot of people said e-commerce wouldn’t work in Singapore because we are so small. People would rather go to the retail outlet to try on the clothes. It worked in the USA because of their huge geographical area. I was so unsure but I knew I had to try it out! I spent hours on my old windows desktop studying on how to create a website using Frontpage. I don’t remember how long it took me (I think months) but, I did it in the end! I was so proud of my achievements. This was despite having 2 toddlers...
The AnneeMatthew Story – How we got started (Part 1)

The AnneeMatthew Story – How we got started (Part 1)

We have been around for a very long time, when most of the new mommies are still in school (made me feel like… ancient!) This is the story of how we got started… Be sure to leave us a comment if you have any questions/feedback 🙂 Long time ago….. It was year 2000 and I was 100% breastfeeding my daughter, Rayann. My main intention to breastfeed fully was to save money! I knew how expensive formula milk was because I have an older boy, Ryan. I reckoned I must have spent thousands of dollars on formula for Ryan! The other reason was because of a genetic condition. Allergic rhinitis is a condition whereby you will get clear runny mucus trickling down your nose on most mornings. I have this and so does Ryan. Normally this condition is mistaken as the common cold. It’s not. People who suffers from allergic rhinitis also suffer from eczema. Ryan and I have both. For adults, the problem is manageable. But how do you tell a baby to blow his nose or, cough out the mucus? You can’t. We tried using those things that promised could suck out the mucus, but in the end, the best thing we ever used was our own mouth! Yes. Suck it out and spit it out! I know, it’s yucky but it works!! The worst part about allergic rhinitis is that Ryan would vomit all the time, especially if he coughed on a full stomach. I was cleaning vomits almost on a daily basis and it drove me nuts! His vomits were EXPLOSIVES! He would vomit on his...

Chronicles of a stay home mum

Chronicles of a stay home mum

Chronicles of a stay home mum   Having 2 small kids at home is no joking matter. In fact, on most days, it is very tiring and very exhausting unless, they are at grandma’s. Being a mum needs a lot of creativity to stay sane and, not to mention alive and still walking, at the end of the day.   I used to work in marketing for a MNC which requires a lot of traveling. I had to handle almost 300 personnel and tend to their needs. I’m used to making sales presentations and entertaining until wee hours in the morning but, nothing prepares me for the amount of responsibilities that I have to shoulder as a full time mum.   So here are my survival tips for any stay home mums out there (or those that plan to be one) in no whatsoever order… LEARN TO LOVE READING Kids just love to be read to. They will soak up any bedtime stories. Bearing in mind that their choice of bedtime stories may not be exactly your cup of tea, you must learn to love reading. I mean really love it with all your heart so, when you read, you will not be the first to yawn! The trick is to inject animation into the reading so, they will stay interested (hopefully interested enough to want to read on their own one day) and most importantly, to keep yourself awake!   LEARN TO VISIT THE LIBRARY You have no idea what kind of questions they can come up with. To avoid making up stories (which is a no-no) or...
10 Tips for Mompreneurs

10 Tips for Mompreneurs

In last week’s post, Annie shared her story of how she began Annee Matthew – in her search for stylish nursing wear, she came up empty – and so decided to start her own instead! This week, she shares her 10 tips for mompreneurs. This is also relevant if you are running / starting a SOHO business! Here are 10 things you need to know: 1. Discipline is key – Create a time table for everyone to see mom’s working hours (it could be 20-30mins block) – Then stick to the time table! 2. Have a proper office – Create a working space (with a no entry sign, if possible, when mom is working) – It could be the dining table, but when mom is there working during her working hours, nobody disturbs her (this would take some training with the younger children but you gotta stick to it) 3. Perfection is not the goal – It’s OK to have a messy house; nobody is going to judge you – It’s OK to have messy looking healthy kids; they are having fun and you are a wonderful mom 4. Have a TO DO LIST – Prioritize; get the most important done first and the least important, when you have extra time & energy – Have a fresh list every night and, don’t give yourself any excuses that “the list is in my head!” – What the mind sees, it will do; so, make sure you write it down. 5. Be flexible – If things doesn’t work out the way you planned, it’s OK – Look at the lessons learned...
